Saints outlast Pistons 7-5

The division leading Winnipeg Saints visited the Steinbach Pistons on Wednesday night and beat the home team 7-5, despite the Pistons outshooting the Saints 57-29.

The Saints drew first blood when Brett Chartier scored 2:51 into the game. At the 7:28 mark the Pistons tied the game on the powerplay. Connor Sisson scored, assisted by Cam Hildebrand and Francois Houde.

The Pistons then took a quick lead in the 2nd period. Jace Baldwin scored 3:10 into the period, assisted by Drew Scurfield and Dylan Friend. 1:07 later Tyler Peers made it 3-1 for the Pistons, assisted by Josh Rutherford and Cam Hildebrand. The Saints responded quickly, with a goal by Kyle Bodnaruk making it 3-2. At the 7:25 mark Rutherford scored a powerplay goal to extend the Pistons lead to 4-2, assisted by Mike Gemmill and Mike Collins. With 10:20 remaining in the 2nd Jordan Davies would score for the Saints, and then with 4:09 remaining Bodnaruk had his 2nd of the game to tie the game at 4 after 2 periods.

4:42 into the 3rd period Ryan Audino scored to give the Saints a 5-4 lead. With 5:55 remaining in the game Cole Pruden would extend the lead to 6-4. Eric Coulombe scored the Pistons third powerplay goal of the game with 2:07 remaining, assisted by Drew Scurfield and Mike Collins to make it 6-5. They also had their goalie pulled for an extra attacker. They kept the goalie pulled as their powerplay continued, but David Conrad would score an empty net shorthanded goal with 1:35 to go, to make it 7-5.

Justin Leclerc stopped 52 out of 57 shots for the Saints, while Addison Herosian stopped 23 of 29 for the Pistons.

The Pistons play next on Friday when they travel to Dauphin to take on the league-leading Kings.
