Pistons lose close game to Saints

The Steinbach Pistons took on the division leading Winnipeg Saints on Saturday night in front of a record crowd of over 700 fans. They outshot the Saints 44-30 and had the lead late in the game, but two goals in the last 2:26 of the 3rd period gave Winnipeg a 5-4 victory.

The teams traded powerplay goals in the 1st period to make it 1-1 after 1. Mike Collins scored 3:04 into the game, assisted by Josh Rutherford and Mike Gemmill. Paul Crane responded with 1:39 remaining in the period.

Jeff Mitchell scored for the Saints 2:40 into the 2nd to put them ahead. Mitch Dougall would respond for the Pistons with an unassisted goal 5 minutes later, and with the 8:58 remaining in the 2nd Kyle Rous would make it 3-2 for the Pistons, with assists going to Mike Gemmill and Eric Coulombe.

The Saints would tie the game at 3 early in the 3rd period when Blake Chartier scored a powerplay goal just 1:04 into the last frame. With 4:57 left in the game Eric Coulombe scored on the powerplay, assisted by Mike Collins, to give the Pistons a 4-3 lead. They couldn't hold on to the lead for long, however, as Brett Chartier tied the game back up just 2:31 later. Then with 1:04 remaining in the 3rd Kael Peterson of the Saints scored the go-ahead goal to give them a 5-4 win in a hard-fought game.

Addison Herosian stopped 25 of 30 shots for the Pistons while Kent Henry made 40 saves on 44 shots.

The Pistons play their last game of the 2009/10 season on Sunday the 21st at 7:30 against the Winkler Flyers.
