2023 MJHL Draft Recap

The 2023 MJHL Draft took place this past weekend and the Pistons are proud to welcome an exciting class of young players to the organization.

The draft took place on Sunday morningĀ  at the Alt Hotel in downtown Winnipeg.

The Pistons elected to pass on their auto-protect picks, as did our counterparts in Portage, Winkler and Waywayseecappo.

The Pistons had the 12th pick in the first round where we were proud to select McCreary, Manitoba product forward Brady Turko of the Brandon Wheat Kings U18 AAA. Brady tallied up 43 points in 44 games last season.

In the second round, the Pistons had two picks, the first coming in the 17th spot where we selected forward Blake Farthing of the Interlake Lightning U18 AAA. Followed by Dominion City native defenceman Kasen Mateychuk of the Eastman Selects U18 AAA in the 26th spot.

The Pistons went with a defenseman in round 3 selecting Tate Dolinsky who played with the Rink Hockey Academy’s U16 program this past season where he put up 31 points in 30 games played.

Paul Dyck and his staff went looking for a goaltender in the 4th round and that’s what they got in Winnipeg born Brant Catellier. Brant was also with the RHA U16 program last season where he played 18 games with t .950SV% and a GAA of 1.22.

The first of 2 selections in round 5 was forward Wyatt Stinton of Flin Flon, Manitoba who was also a member of the RHA U16 team last season racking up 36 points in 23 games played. The Pistons second selection in round 5 Winnipeg product forward Ben Brambilla of the Winnipeg Thrashers U18 AAA.

Winnipeg Wild U17 AAA forward Hayden Turner was the Pistons 6th round pick in the 82nd spot.

The Pistons elected to pass on their 8th round pick as many other teams did so the last selection for Steinbach in the 2023 MJHL Draft was Winnipeg born forward Matthew Gard in the 7th round. Matthew was a point per game player as a rookie on the RINK Hockey Academy’s U18 squad.

Following Sunday’s draft, Pistons Head Coach/Hm Paul Dyck says his team is very happy with their selections and looks forward to seeing how these players continue on their development paths in the coming years as they work their way towards playing junior hockey.
