Inter-League Play a Success in Fort Frances

The Steinbach Pistons are now 2-0 in preseason play after they defeated the Fort Frances Lakers 4-2 Friday night at the Ice For Kids Arena in Fort Frances.

This was an uncharacteristic trip for the Pistons who have always played their exhibition games versus MJHL teams since they arrived in Steinbach. This year the league scheduled a home-in-home series to give both sets of fans a look into a different league.

The Pistons roster consisted of three returning players Brodie Buhler, Braden Compton and Mathieu Gomercic. The rest were prospects fighting for a spot on the opening day roster come September 25th on home ice.

And the Pistons hopefuls didn’t disappoint getting the away team out to a 3-0 lead after the first two frames. Goals were scored by Waylon Petkau, Luke Amsbaugh and Quinn Wasylak.

Isaiah Olshewske and Kyle Folson made it interesting in the third when they brought the home side within a goal. However, that would be as close as the Lakers would get to completing the comeback as Amsbaugh tallied his second of the game late in the third period to give Steinbach a two goal lead.

Tristian Knott accumulated two assists while Scott Petkau, Drew Anderson, Amundson, Compton and Mack Graham each contributed one.

Roman Bengart and Bennet Garber split time in the net, combining to steer away 30 of the 32 shots faced. The Pistons outshot their opponents 32-27, outshooting the Lakers in each of the three periods.

The Pistons are back in action tomorrow evening when they host the Selkrik Steelers 730PM at the T.G. Smith Centre. The Pistons defeated the Steelers in the rookie game 7-2 back on Monday.
