Mattfield, Fuchs, And Plowman Lead Pistons Over Steelers

Wyatt Mattfield had three points while Jamie Fuchs scored twice and Cole Plowman made 27 saves in Steinbach’s 3-1 win over the Selkirk Steelers.

It just over five minutes for Steinbach to get on the board in the first as Mattfield bullied his way to the slot and picked up a loose puck then wired it home for his second of the year. Spencer Penner and Jackson Kostiuk were given the helpers.

The lead would grow with under four minutes to go in the frame as Jamie Fuchs wired home his second of the year from in tight to extend the lead to 2-0. Mattfield and Hunter Degelman picked up the assists as the Pistons went into the first intermission with the lead and also outshooting Selkirk 11-10.

Less than three minutes into the second, Fuchs struck again as the 19-year-old bulldog teamed up again with Mattfield to outwork the Steelers down low before bouncing a puck over the goal line for his second of the night and 3rd of the year. Mattfield capped off a tidy three-point night with the lone assist.

The rest of the period was a back-and-forth affair. Not on the scoreboard but in trips to the penalty box.

Both teams took turns sitting for 2:00 because neither power play could find the back of the net.

Steinbach’s Cole Plowman made some huge saves while shorthanded in the second period, stopping al 8 shots he faced and keeping Steinbach ahead 3-0 after 40 minutes.

In the third, the parade to the penalty box continued for both sides yet the score did not change.

Selkirk broke the shutout bid at the midway point, giving them a little hope at 3-1.

That was as close as they would get as Plowman and the defenders shut the door the rest of the way including when late in the game the Pistons took a penalty, combined with the Steelers pulling the goalie giving them a 6 on 4 advantage.

Plowman’s 27-save performance improves his record to 3-0 to start the new year.

Steinbach’s power play was a woeful 0-8 while the penalty kill was a sparkling 9-9.

The Pistons and Steelers have a rematch set for Friday night in Selkirk. Steinbach’s next home game at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie is Saturday night when they welcome in Bauer Kasdorf and the Winnipeg Freeze.
