Pistons Captain Tyson McConnell being presented with the IBAM-MJHL Scholarship by IBAM CEO Grant Wainnika.

McConnell Wins IBAM-MJHL Scholarship

Pistons captain Tyson McConnell was recognized last night at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg, as he won the prestigious IBAM-MJHL Scholarship at the annual IBAM President’s Dinner.

The Pilot Mound native received a $2,000 scholarship from the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba for his commitment both on and off the ice.

The theme for the dinner last night was “Superheros”, and McConnell should be recognized as Steinbach’s “Iron Man”. He played in an astounding 232 consecutive games over the course of four seasons, and this season recorded 20 goals and 27 assists to be the Pistons’ second leading scorer. He blocked shots, played huge minutes on the penalty kill and power play, and led by example for all of his teammates on the ice.

McConnell excelled off the ice, as he regularly spent his time volunteering in and around Steinbach, collected his teammates’ volunteer hours, and has been an excellent student in the classroom over the course of his four years with the Pistons organization.

Tyson becomes the second Piston to win the IBAM-MJHL Scholarship, joining Dan Taillefer who won the award back in 2016.

McConnell was presented with the scholarship by IBAM CEO Grant Wainnika. He plans to use this to help him attend a U Sports school in the fall.

On behalf of the Steinbach Pistons organization, we would like to congratulate our 2018-19 captain Tyson McConnell on this incredible honor and to wish him luck as he furthers his hockey career and academic journey!
