The Steinbach Pistons responded after dropping the season opener, putting together a solid effort in a 4-2 win over the Winker Flyers.
Before the game started, the Pistons were introduced to the packed HyLife Center in La Broquerie. Captain Noah Szabo got a big cheer but local boy Eric Cote also got a nice ovation when his name was called.
Once the game got underway, both teams played a tight checking, quick, fast paced game. Both teams had chances but strong goaltending kept the game scoreless
Winkler got on the board first later in the opening period and took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
In the second, a Spencer Penner point shot snuck through a maze of legs and pads, finding the back of the net to even the game 1-1. Sam Noad and Jamie Fuchs had the assists.
The Flyers would grab the lead back, quickly responding and taking a 2-1 lead.
Grady Hoffman would even things up on a power play as the sniper picked the corner and tied the game 2-2. Noah Szabo and Connor Paronuzzi picked up the assists.
The second came to an end with the game deadlocked.
In the third, the Pistons gained their first lead thanks to Paronuzzi who took a nice feed from Brayden Barnett and rifled home his first of the year, putting Steinbach up 3-2.
Jamie Fuchs would extend the lead to two as the 20-year-old cashed in off a pretty pass from Noad, providing the Pistons a cushion up 4-2.
That lead would hold and the Pistons sent the home fans home happy, picking up their first win of the year.
Christian Green was solid in goal for Steinbach making 22 saves in his first MJHL start.
The power play finished 1-3 while the penalty kill was perfect, going 1-1.
A good week of practice is ahead as Pistons won’t see game action again until Friday night when they welcome in the Swan Valley Stampeders.
