Pistons Defeat Flyers to Widen MJHL Lead

Scoring four third period goals, the Steinbach Pistons trounced the Winkler Flyers 7-3 Friday night in Steinbach in a battle of the top two teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

This was a close game through the first 40 minutes as it was tied 1-1 after first and the Pistons took a 3-2 lead into the third.

Braden Purtill notched a pair for the Pistons while Mackenzie Graham, who leads the team in scoring, had a goal and two assists. Graham now has 30 goals and 72 points on the season, second overall in the MJHL scoring race.

Bradley Schoonbaert, Landon Plett, Will Koop and Danny Pion had the other Steinbach markers.

The Pistons improved their leading record to 41-7-1, eight points ahead of the second place Flyers, who fall to 36-13-3. The Pistons also have three games in hand on the Flyers.

Steinbach outshot Winkler 37-29 as Roman Bengert picked up the win in net for the Pistons.

Elsewhere in the MJHL on Friday: Virden crushed Winnipeg 6-1, Neepawa upset Portage 5-3 and Selkirk doubled Swan Valley 8-4.

The Pistons will host the Swan Valley Stampeders Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the T.G. Smith Centre in Steinbach.
