Pistons dominate Blues in pre-season win

Rookie Dawson Waddell scored two goals to lead the Steinbach Pistons to a 6-2 victory over the Winnipeg Blues in Manitoba Junior Hockey League pre-season action Tuesday night in Steinbach.

Waddell, the Brandon product, scored the games first goal and only goal of the opening period and then added an empty netter at game’s end.

In between those two markers the Pistons dominated the Blues, skating to period leads of 1-0 and 4-1, and outshot the Blues 41-22 in the process.

Darby Gula, Ryan Carlson, Jordan Bochinski and Taylor Gatto had the other Steinbach markers.

Veteran netminder Roman Bengert was in goal the first half of the game, stopping 13 of 14 shots while rookie Matthew Thiessen took over the second half as he stopped seven of eight shots.

Coach Paul Dyck is expected to make a couple more roster moves heading into the club’s final two exhibition games this weekend in a home-and-home series with the Selkirk Steelers.The Pistons will be in Selkirk on Friday and will return home to host the Steelers on Saturday. Both those games get underway at 7:30 p.m.

Steinbach will open the MJHL regular season at home on Friday, Sept. 23 as the Pistons entertain the Waywayseecappo Wolverines at 7:30
