A second straight game needed overtime to decide a winner and Cole Smith scored to give the Pistons a 4-0 series win over The Swan Valley Stampeders Thursday night.
The Pistons fell behind early in the first and after the opening 20 minutes were down 2-0.
Hayden Goderis would cut the lead in half midway through the second period before scoring the game tieing goal in the third. Tyler Anderson and Robert Briem had assists on Goderis’ goals.
In overtime, the play went back and forth before Cole Smith streaked down the boards past a Stampeder defenceman, cut towards the net and slid it home to seal the deal for Steinbach.
Roman Bengert picked up the win as the Pistons outshot Swan 53-23.
Power play finished 0-4 and the penalty kill went 3-4.
The Pistons are the first team in the MJHL to punch their ticket to the second round and depending on the outcome of the Winkler Flyers versus OCN Blizzard game on Friday night, the Flyers lead that series 3-1, the Pistons could know their second round opponent.
Steinbach will take a couple days off before resuming practice on Sunday. A schedule of Round two will be on SteinbachOnline.com when it’s released.
