The Steinbach Pistons beat the Waywayseecappo Wolverines by a score of 3-2 Friday evening at the TG Smith Centre.
Prior to puck drop the Pistons had a little ceremony as Ray Neufeld was honoured for Black History Month and did the ceremonial puck drop. Dominik Wasik was also awarded the Pistons Player of the Month for February where he went 6-1 over the month of February.
The first period saw no scoring but each team’s powerplay got to work. Both team’s penalty kill locked down and kept the game 0-0 going into the first intermission.
The Wolverines would draw first blood just over halfway through the second period with a powerplay goal. Leyton Smith put a puck on net that got through traffic and past Dominik Wasik who did not see it to make it 1-0.
Steinbach would get some more powerplay opportunities in the second period but could not generate anything and would not capitalize on the chances.
The Pistons would even the score at the 3:25 mark of the third period. Parker Jasper got the puck at the point and made a nice move around the Wolverines player to generate some space and ripped it past the big Marek Andres for his first goal as a Piston.
Just over a minute later the Pistons would strike again to take their first lead on the powerplay. Jasper found Travis Hensrud in the high slot who then rung it off the crossbar with Leo Chambers finding the puck and batting it out of the air and into the net to make it 2-1.
Just before the midway point of the period a fight broke out between Ian Amsbaugh and Sean Williams, a rarity for the Pistons, ending both of their nights. Amsbaugh got a couple good shots in, the fight ending by them grappling each other to the ice.
Just over halfway through the third period the Wolverines would capitalize on the powerplay to make it 2-2. The Wolverines had a two on one with Carson Baptiste shooting the puck on net and Cody Blight one timing the rebound past Wasik.
The Wolverines would take two penalties late in the game, setting the Pistons up for a golden opportunity. With 5:05 left in the third Lucas Eagle was assessed a 2-minute minor for boarding. Steinbach would try to find that late game winning goal, but the Wolverines would kill it off.
With 1:39 remaining the Wolverines would take another penalty, sending them to the penalty kill for the remainder of regulation. Leo Chambers got the puck to Warren Clark at the point who then swung it to Ty Paisley who put a seeing eye shot past Andres to give them the go ahead powerplay goal with 54-seconds remaining.
The Pistons would hold on for the remainder of the period and secure the 3-2 win making it 5-straight wins.
