Pistons Win Hard Fought Game Over the Winkler Flyers

The Steinbach Pistons beat the Winkler Flyers by a score of 2-1 Wednesday evening at the Centennial Arena in Winkler.

Both teams got some powerplay opportunities midway through the opening frame but each team’s penalty kill would come up big and kill off the penalties.

With just over five minutes remaining in the first period Landon Roberts would get a double minor penalty for high sticking. Winkler would capitalize on this opportunity, taking a 1-0 lead. Daniel Isaak took a shot from the point that got past a screened Dominik Wasik, giving Winkler the lead.

Steinbach would tie the game up early in the second period. Landon Roberts got the puck in the neutral zone and entered the Flyers end, getting past the defenders and wiring a shot past Malachi Klassen to make it 1-1.

Midway through the second period some rough stuff would break out as David Cote would be assessed a match penalty for a hit he made behind the Winkler net. Lucas Ens would also be thrown out of the game as he would be assessed a fighting penalty for his retaliation in response to the Cote hit.

As a result of that situation the Pistons were given a 2-minute powerplay as Ens was also given a penalty for instigator, but the Pistons would not be able to take advantage of the opportunity.

Steinbach would get two separate powerplays early in the third period, but the dominant Flyers penalty kill would stay strong and kill off both penalties, keeping the game tied 1-1.

Steinbach would break the tie and take their first lead of the game midway through the third period. Langley Kruggel put a shot on net from the point with the puck hitting someone in front and Dawson Milliken finding the loose puck and potting it to make the game 2-1.

Steinbach would hold on to the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the game, securing the win and going a perfect 5/5 in wins against the Flyers this season.
