Quick Start Leads to Victory over Virden

Hayden Goderis and Jordan Bochinski both scored a pair of goals as the Steinbach Pistons downed the Virden Oil Capitals 5-3 in the first of back-to-back meetings in Virden this weekend.

Bochinski put the Pistons on the board early, scoring at 2:24. Steinbach would make it 3-0 in the 2nd off the sticks of Taillefer and Goderis who both found the back of the net in the first five minutes.

Despite the Oil Capitals outshooting the Pistons 24-15 through the opening two frames, Virden only lit the red light once and that was off a Drake Bodie goal at 15:18 of the 2nd. That goal pulled Virden within 2, making it 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Goderis scored his 2nd of the game,  his 10th of the season just over halfway through the 3rd to restore Steinbach’s three goal lead. Virden didn’t lay down just yet, as they made it interesting for the hometown fans scoring goals 43 seconds a part in the final minutes.

Colton Spicer and Dylan Thiessen netted markers at 17:47 and 18:29. Before Virden could complete the comeback Bochinski found the empty net for his 9th goal of the season, which ties his goal mark from a season ago.

The MJHL’s Goaltender of the Month runner up for the second straight time, Roman Bengert picked up his 14th win, stopping 33-of-36.

The MJHL’s Goaltender of the Month, Sean Kuehn was given the loss steering away 17-of-22.

The Pistons are now 2-1 against Virden this season and will play a rematch against the Oil Capitals Saturday night before completing their three-in-three weekend with a match-up in Swan Valley on Sunday.
