Strong Second Period Leads Winkler to 7-3 Win

The Winkler Flyers bested the Steinbach Pistons by a commanding 7-3 win in game 5, forcing a game 6 in round 1.

The Pistons opened the scoring at the 4:34 mark of the first period. Ty Paisley gave a beautiful back door feed to a sprawled-out Dawson Milliken who then tapped it past Malachi Klassen to give the Pistons a 1-0 lead.

With just over 5-minutes remaining in the opening frame the Flyers would tie the game up 1-1. Dalton Andrew put the puck on net with Dominik Wasik making the save but the rebound bounced off Zach Nicolas’ skate and into the back of the net.

Just over a minute later the Pistons would bounce back and restore the one goal lead. Landon Roberts got the puck to Davis Fry at the right faceoff dot who then sniped it top right corner and past the glove of Klassen.

Winkler would not shy away as they would tie it up once again with just over two minutes remaining in the period with a powerplay goal. Dalton Andrew put a puck on net from the point with Xyon Kiemeney tapping the puck up and over Wasik and into the back of the net.

The back-and-forth game would stop in the second period as the middle frame would be all Winkler. The Flyers took a 3-2 lead 10-seconds into the second period. Xyon Kiemeney got the puck behind the net and wrapped it around out front for Mike Svenson to tap it past Wasik.

A minute later Winkler would extend their lead to 4-2. A turnover in the neutral zone resulted in Winkler getting a two on one with Kyle Crewe getting the puck to Nicholas McKee who put it past Wasik.

At the 12:28 mark of the second period Winkler made it 5-2 with a powerplay goal. Brody Beauchemin got the puck at the side boards, making a move to the high slot and ripping it past Wasik.

Nine seconds later Winkler would light the lamp again to make it 6-2. Dalton Andrew got the puck down low, making a move to get out front and slipped it past Wasik and into the net.

Steinbach would have their work cut out for them going into the third period, trying to cut down the Flyers four goal lead.

The Pistons would cut the lead to three goals at the 4:47 mark of the third period. Ty Paisley got the puck to Dawson Milliken who was in behind the Flyers defence, and he put it glove side on Klassen.

Winkler would smother all hope of a Pistons come back as they restored the four-goal lead midway through the third period. Dalton Andrew got his second goal and fourth point of the game to make it 7-3.

Winkler would go on to the win the game 7-3, bringing the series to 3-2 with game 6 in Winkler on Sunday afternoon.
