Dominant Third Period Propels Blues over Pistons

The Winnipeg Blues beat the Steinbach Pistons 7-4 Saturday evening, getting 3 goals in the third period.

The game got off to a good start seeing some good, back and forth hockey with both teams getting good scoring chances. The Blues starting goaltender Dawson Green got a break for the game so backup Dawson Cowan was in net.

The Pistons opened the scoring midway through the first period as Blues defencemen Matthew McLeod caught and edge and tripped into the boards turning over the puck to Cooper Rice. Rice gave a nice feed to Neo Kiemeny wide open in front of the net who made no mistake there. The secondary assist went to captain Zac Patrick.

Less than 2 minutes later Nate Goodbrandson extended the lead to 2 goals as he scored on the power play from Jack Rogers and Travis Hensrud.

The Blues wouldn’t let the 2-goal lead last long as Blues leading scorer Eric Fawkes scored unassisted to make the game 2-1.

Josiah Vanderhooft would tie the game up at 2-2 with 13 seconds left in the period on the powerplay with a nice shot from the point. The game was tied 2-2 after the first period with the shot totals 19-12 for the Pistons.

The Blues would take the lead midway through the second period as Caden Zaplitny would get the puck past Pistons goaltender Simon Harkness.

The Pistons would tie the game up with under 2-minutes to go in the second period with a nice tip from Davis Fry off Ethan Johnson’s shot from the point.

The tied game would not last long as Eric Fawkes would restore the one goal lead with under a minute to go in the period putting the Blues up 4-3. After the second period the shot totals were 35-22 for the Pistons.

The ice was tilted in the third period as the Blues took complete control of the game going on to score 3 goals in just over 3 minutes. Brayden Foreman scored the first of the period with a nice move getting it top corner. Josiah Vanderhooft and Jaden Ostrowski would go on to score 13 seconds apart to make the score 7-3 for the Blues.

The Pistons still had a little bit of fight left in them as Nate Goodbrandson got his second goal of the game with the assists coming from Neo Kiemeny and Cooper Rice to make the game 7-4.

The Pistons outshot the Blues 49-34, but it was not enough as the final score was 7-4 for the Blues.
