The Steinbach Pistons concluded their early-season four-game homestand with a 6-3 win over the Winnipeg Monarchs on Friday night.
Steinbach propelled itself to a 4-0 lead in the first period. Parson Shahi opened the scoring with his first MJHL goal at 2:50, followed by a pair of goals from Griffin Krone at 3:37 and 7:29, with his second of the game coming on the man advantage. Marek Miller would then rip home his third of the year on the power play at 15:50 to make the contest look like an early-stage blowout.
Winnipeg got on the board late in the first as Carter Kingerski made it a three-goal game 17:03 into the opening stanza.
Just over a minute into the second, Chase Gregg cut the Pistons’ lead in half, making it 4-2.
It was a more tame second period in terms of scoring, but Caden Lave put Steinbach back up by three in the final minute when he made an incredible move in front of the Monarchs’ net to put his second of the season past Piet Mierau.
Steinbach added a shorthanded goal in the final minutes of the contest, coming off the stick of Eric Han for his second of the campaign.
Carter Kingerski got one back for the Monarchs at 17:39 with his second of the matchup.
Steinbach held on to improve to 4-1-0-0 while maintaining a 3-1 record to close out their homestand. Krone earned First Star honours with three points (2G, 1A), while Kai Zurowski made 30 stops.
Krone says it means a lot to earn the trust of the Pistons’ coaching staff since coming over from the Selkirk Steelers via trade.
“It means the world. Obviously, I’m super thankful to be here, it’s an awesome place,” said Krone, speaking with Dave Anthony. “Yeah, it just means a lot, honestly, to be here, being able to play, and contribute.”
With Steinbach collecting two points and Selkirk falling in regulation last night, Steinbach now sits in first place in the MGEU East Division.
The Pistons now hit the road to face the Winkler Flyers on Sunday, their third meeting in the past two weeks. Puck drop is set for 3:30 p.m. CT at Winkler Centennial Arena.
