The Steinbach Pistons remain without a win in the preseason as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Niverville Nighthawks last night at Tank Traders Multiplex in La Salle.
Rohan Guevarra and Griffin Krone suited up for the first time in Pistons colours since being acquired from the Selkirk Steelers earlier this week.
Niverville kicked off the scoring 12:36 into the opening frame when Thomas Harnett slipped the puck through goaltender Lincoln Molind to make it 1-0.
The Nighthawks quickly went up by a pair less than a minute later. Aiden McDonald caught Steinbach’s defence off guard and received a quick pass from behind the net before beating Molind’s pad on a wraparound in front of the goal.
McDonald would add his second of the game on the man advantage 1:53 into the middle frame to triple Niverville’s lead.
Newly acquired Piston Rohan Guevarra got Steinbach on the board a couple of minutes later. He stepped into the slot and fired a nice shot past Niverville netminder Ben Chornomydz to make it a two-goal game.
Molind and Kai Zurowski swapped places halfway through the matchup.
The defending Centennial Cup champions held their two-goal lead into the intermission, but Steinbach would make it a one-goal hockey game 3:32 into the final period of play.
Logan Mehl perfectly set up Cole Cairns with a cross-crease pass for a tap-in on the power play to make it 3-2.
After Steinbach seemed to have life, things fell apart again very quickly. Marlen Edwards found the back of the net twice, while Crewe Schimnowski chipped in on the scoring, all within seven minutes to ultimately help Niverville roll past Steinbach 6-2.
The preseason will come to a close for both teams tonight as they’ll go at it once again, this time at Southeast Event Centre. Steinbach will look to pick up its first win of the preseason at 7:00 p.m. CT.
