Miller, Lamb Strike Twice in 5-2 Win Over Flyers

It is safe to say that the Steinbach Pistons were ready to go right from puck drop this afternoon, as they found the back of the net four times within the first 10 minutes, which ultimately helped them secure two points over the Winkler Flyers at Winkler Centennial Arena.

Just 30 seconds was all the time Steinbach needed to find the game’s first goal. Marek Miller fed a cross-ice pass to Lyndon Lamb, and Lamb returned the dish to Miller, who put his fourth of the season into the yawning cage.

Miller then scored his second of the period at 6:40. Caden Lave put a puck on net from the blue line, and it redirected off the La Salle, Manitoba, native and past Ryler Gates.

Steinbach extended its lead to three at 8:17. Lyndon Lamb beat Gates on the rebound amidst a scramble in front of the Winkler net for his first MJHL marker.

“It felt good to get the first one,” said Lamb, speaking with Dave Anthony about his first goal. “A little bit of a greasy one and hopefully they keep coming.”

Jackson Dunn would then take over in relief of Gates.

Less than two minutes later, Logan Mehl beat Dunn five-hole after he initially stopped Eric Han on a breakaway. Mehl’s second of the year made it 4-0 for the visitors.

In the middle frame, Lamb would become the second Piston to find his second of the contest. Miller centred a pass to Lamb in front of the Flyers’ net, and the former Cornwall Colt made it 5-0 at 8:42.

Winkler found the back of the net twice in the back half of the middle frame. Connor Rieger recorded his first and second goals of the season, including one coming on the man advantage with five seconds left.

Despite registering just five shots on goal in the final 20 minutes, Steinbach held on to pick up its second consecutive win this weekend.

Lincoln Molind bounced back with a 36-save performance, while Miller and Lamb led the way offensively.

Both clubs racked up an absurd amount of penalty minutes, but Steinbach’s PK held strong as they went 7-for-8 while down a man.

Steinbach will conclude its mini two-game road trip on Friday in Niverville when they face the defending MJHL champion Nighthawks at 7:30 p.m. CT.
