The Steinbach Pistons have one of the most unique atmospheres in junior hockey, as people pack the small but friendly confines of the TG Smith Centre in anticipation of a Pistons victory every home game. They are always ready to make some noise for their team.
It shows in the season standings. Steinbach has statistically been the best home team in the MJHL since the beginning of their first championship season (2012-13), with only 29 regulation losses over that span. That’s seven fewer than the Portage Terriers in that same time frame.
In addition to the great teams that the Pistons have had, a large part of that continued success is due to the passionate fans that Steinbach has every night.
“They contribute a ton to the team’s success; they are always loud and supportive,” forward Tanner Mole explained. “Playing in a rink that’s always full of amazing fans is a great experience and is something that I always appreciate.”
The Pistons rewarded their fans by winning the 2018 ANAVET Cup on home ice. The victory allowed them to head to the Canadian junior ‘A’ championship for the first time, putting Steinbach on the national stage.
That tournament showed the dedication of Pistons fans, as hundreds made the trek out to Chilliwack by car and plane to see their team compete for the RBC Cup.
“The support they bring to our organization is one of a kind, and so very appreciated from our staff, management, and the players,” goalie Matt Radomsky said. “I really enjoy volunteering in our community to give back to those that support our program every day.”
Next year will be the 10th anniversary season for the Pistons, and most fans and players are hoping there’s more to get excited about.
“The fans are everything,“ graduating defenceman Mark Taraschuk said. “There’s no better feeling than walking out of the room and hearing the fans screaming. The amount of support the community provides is incredible, and part of the reason why we are so successful. To know that every night there’s going to at least 900 fans packed into the rink to watch us is something so special and makes it that much better to play at home.”
