The Steinbach Pistons are excited to announce that they have hired Calvin Bugyik as their new Assistant Coach for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Bugyik has spent 10 years in the Eastman region, taking on various roles such as assistant and head coach of the Hockey Manitoba Directors Cup team and the Eastman City Selects. He took over as Head Coach of the Selects of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League back in 2013, and led the team to a 93-28-11 record during his time. His best season was 2015-16, guiding Eastman to a 40-1-3 regular season record and a trip to the finals.
He has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Winnipeg Wild of the MMHL, helping them to championships over the past two seasons.
“I’m most looking forward to the challenge of being in a new league,” Bugyik said. “Having been around midget hockey for as long as I have, it’s exciting to be moving up to the MJHL level.”
“Calvin brings a winning pedigree with him, and a strong track record of player development,” Head Coach and General Manager Paul Dyck said. “We believe he is a great fit for our program. Calvin understands what it takes to win and assist players in getting to the next level. He is very experienced and will be someone the players will enjoy working with.”
Bugyik played junior hockey for two seasons as a goaltender with the Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League from 1999-2001.
“With the amount of on and off ice success Paul and his staff have had the last number of years, by no means do I expect to come in and drastically alter what they do,” he explained when asked what he will bring to the Pistons. “I have seen when the makeup of a staff is changed that a new set of eyes can bring a new perspective. I hope to add that different perspective based on my experiences, and the fact that I’ve been fortunate to work and interact with so many quality coaches in other programs.”
Bugyik takes over for Joey Moggach, who was the Assistant Coach with the Pistons for the past two seasons.
