Olivier Mathieu found the back of the net twice in the Steinbach Pistons’ 4-1 win over the Dauphin Kings in Dauphin last night on Halloween Eve.
Mathieu kicked off the scoring 9:35 into the first period with his fifth of the year. He dropped the puck off to Luke Assi and charged straight to the net. Assi’s shot was initially stopped by Tate Barnaby, but the rebound ricocheted off Mathieu and into the back of the net.
Steinbach extended its lead to two late in the opening frame. William Picklyk, who was recently named to the U18 roster for the 2026 Western All-Star Challenge, broke out on a 2-on-1 with Assi. Assi dished a pass over to the 17-year-old, who one-timed it past Barnaby for his third of the year.
Declan Andrews got the hometown Kings on the board at 4:58 of the second, beating Pistons goaltender Lincoln Molind to make it 2-1.
The Pistons started the third period in style, scoring two power-play goals in a span of 2:40. Gavin Haslam’s one-timer from the high slot created a rebound in the crease, and amid the ensuing scramble, Lyndon Lamb poked the puck home to make it 3-1. The Athens, Ontario, product’s ninth of the year came just 1:34 into the third.
Steinbach’s second power-play marker of the period came off the stick of Mathieu for his second of the night. The Pistons entered Dauphin’s zone on a 3-on-2, and the Quebec City-born forward cut into the middle and fired a wrist shot past the Kings’ netminder’s blocker to make it 4-1 for the visitors.
Molind locked things down for the rest of the contest, making 35 saves to help his club earn two points. Steinbach improved to 11-3-0-0 with the win and remains at the top of the MGEU East Division.
“Oh, it’s great,” said Paxton White when asked by Dave Anthony about Molind’s recent play. “It’s great to have a brick wall back there, you have a little more confidence on the point.”
Steinbach will return home for Superhero and Princesses Night at Southeast Event Centre on Sunday as it faces the Portage Terriers for the fourth time in the past three games
